GLOCAL? English gone loco!
I just wonder how much that speechwriter was given to come up with such a fancy term - glocal - guess I am getting confused with the medication for joint pains glocosamine.
It seems to be taken form the HSBC slogan of being the world's local bank.
Now why do I dislike such a new term?
It is just too much hype - asking the Bumis to start competing globally while even in their own kampong, they still need hand-outs like APs even though these have been dished out for the past 25 years.
At first the scooping was quite small, a dozen or so each year. I guess they learned some lessons in the process and now they give the APs out by the thousands.
Some recipients have complained that receiving APs is not such a rosy hand-out - but hey if it is so hard, why don't they just decline and let others get a few hundred instead?
The other thing is that glocal is too confusing. Someone wrote that men can do only one thing at a time.
Here we are struggling to get our teachers and students to develop skills in the English language and now we have the DPM confusing everyone with this mind-boggling term.
But he is a good public speaker though.
