A Film for all Malaysian Women

I watched this movie on HBO recently and I think it can help Malaysian women to think out of the box.

The movieIron Jawed Angels stars Hilary Swank who leads the fight for women’s rights in America.

Women in Malaysia face different challenges, including a government that sees fit to pass laws that discriminate against women even when a minister claims that they are aware of the flaws in the Family Law.

As women take on more challenging roles in society, they should not forget that to preserve their status they need to be more vigilant about laws that will ultimately affect their welfare.

Perhaps these laws are meant to keep women in check lest they become more influential than men in Malaysian society. Already the signs are there – more women than men enrolling in university and getting more qualified.

Some men don’t like these developments and the law appears to put a brake on the women’s progress. Maybe the women should organise themselves politically and vote in a female Prime Minister.

Looking at the mess the country is in with the all-male leaders, maybe a woman PM may be good for Malaysia. After all, she will not be the first woman to lead a country.
