The Departure – Stage 2
After my son was seen through the departure gate, we went to the Cathay Pacific counter and tried to find a flight out of Singapore to Toronto. They only opened at 6:30am and the counter staff advised us that booking directly with them was rather expensive and furthermore the flights to Toronto were full as the Hongkong-Toronto leg had been taken up by the Hongkong school vacationers.
In the airline wars, don't you think it rather strange that airlines do not encourage last minute travellers? After all, the staff is paid for and if the plane is not going to be full why not just sell the tickets?
The guy advised us to go to a travel agent that operated on Saturdays. In hindsight we should have gone home asp and gone online to book a flight on SIA that had flights out on Changi on Saturdays later in the day.
We had not slept on Friday night as we were busy packing and so we wearily headed home for some shut-eye. At 10am we awoke and my wife found a SIA package for 2 to Vancouver online but we did not book. We went to a travel agent in Chinatown and booked the same promotion but the earliest flight was for Monday.
Next we had to book with Air Canada for Vancouver to Toronto and Halifax.
We were ready to fly again and Sunday was a little more relaxed compared to Friday.
I then sent emails to cancel some hotel bookings as the itinerary had to be changed.
On Moday we left Singapore on SQ18 to Vancouver.
By the way, I found one water dispensing machine not working in Changi!
It was a kind of Amazing Race but we had no hope of catching up with our son in Toronto.
