Choosing the Easy Option?
The government has just forced through the new Family Law that discriminates against Muslim women. Many women senators protested but legislative rape was committed anyway.
Now we have the Human Resources Minister saying that a company responsible for 4 deaths may only be fined RM5000.
There is also a letter from a lawyer in the NST explaining how the police could have treated this mishap under the Penal Code instead of the outdated and inconsequential Factories & Machinery Act 1967.
In today’s Star, it is reported that the court in Singapore has fined the main contractor the maximum of S$200,000 for its lapses in the Nicoll Highway collapse. More cases are pending.
Meanwhile the use of safety netting is to protect from mainly small construction debris and not large objects so stay as far away from building sites as possible.
Instead of passing new laws that even its own appointees object to, the government should have a panel to review existing laws. Surely we do not require people to die before any law is reviewed?
