When did the NRD Become Negligent?
About 16 years ago, my wife was a victim of a snatch thief who struck just as we were all getting out of the car. No one was hurt but she had to make a police report before she applied for the replacement IC.
The police were nonchalant and considered the case a really minor one, just “biasa-lah.”
So my wife applied for a replacement IC with the police report.
I was therefore quite surprised to learn today that the practice of making a police report had been discontinued and now the NRD has decided to require a police report again.
It seems that the NRD became complacent or negligent when the MyKad was introduced. Perhaps the vendors of the MK touted the security features too much and included the cost of police reports as one expense that could be reduced.
Now the authorities claim that 1000 MKs are reported missing to the NRD who also believe that many are simply selling the MK and applying for new ones. Syndicates have been able to alter all details on the MK except the chip.
When the MK was launched it was claimed that fake identities would be eliminated but it seems the technology of MK will be obsolete when syndicates are able to overcome the security of the chip. After all it is not worth more than RM20.
If we assume 1000 MKs being sold over 365 days in a year, there will be 365,000 illegal residents with fake identities. Considering the illegals problem in Sabah, it is quite possible for at least 10 state seats to have been padded with such people.
Were any NRD officers involved in this potential for election fraud? Since there is uncertainty about the electoral rolls especially in Sabah, the Elections Committee should recheck their names for fake MyKad holders.
