Can We Get This Right?
Organ donation is such a selfless act when a dead person’s organs are harvested so that others can benefit from an organ transplant and up to 30 persons can receive a new lease of life from one person.
Therefore it is sad to learn that some hospitals do not even know the proper procedure to help the grieving family ease the burden of organ donation.
It is quite surprising that blood tests were only done after the death of the patient.
All departments of a hospital should know the procedures and the least they should do is to check with the department in charge of coordinating with the National Transplant Resource Centre.
If we want to encourage more organ donors the NTRC should provide clearer guidelines to hospitals that should then disseminate the guidelines to all departments.
Otherwise people will just lose interest like the six family members who are now reconsidering their organ pledges.
The other story is more heartwarming as it is the story of a family that donated the organs of their only child.
Many hospitals are now ISO certified. Perhaps one of the documentation should be about organ donation procedures like who pays for tests etc.
