Bridging Problems in Sarawak

While Johor Baru’s infamous crooked bridge saga continues to churn out unpleasantries, our fellow citizens in Sarawak prove that indeed we can build bridges of good quality and reasonable costs.
I refer to the opening of the Batang Rajang Bridge, a 1.22km four-lane bridge spanning the mighty Rajang River.
This project was not without problems and they had to get a second contractor to complete the job.
Thus the costs escalated from RM96m to RM180m after the completion date was “rescheduled many times”.
I guess it only proves that there is plenty of money to be made in construction especially if tenders are awarded without careful deliberations.
