A Case of Subversion

Today’s Star carries the story of a jobless man, a PR who has managed to register 2 foreign babies under his name so that they are automatically Malaysian citizens.

First of all, SYABAS to the senior officer in the NRD who managed to detect the false documentation and called the police.

I am quite surprised that children born to PRs are given citizenship as I thought only a citizen can transfer this privilege to his offspring. Being born in Malaysia does not carry this right as the child follows his father’s citizenship.

All Malaysians should be concerned about how many other cases have gone undetected and perhaps there should be a task force to create a central database to examine the problem.

NRD staff should also be more diligent and refer dubious cases to a superior rather than just do the processing.

Finally, the crime should not be treated as cheating but that of making a false declaration. If convicted, he should be black-listed and deported.
