Too Little, Too Late
While the decision to inform the public of the API is welcome, it is really disappointing that only after the pollution has reached the hazardous level that the Malaysian Cabinet has decided to start "talks" with the Indonesians.
Given that this is not the first time we are facing the haze problem, it is really astonishing that we had to wait the PM's return to actually do something. Do we not have contingency plans and also emergency communication link-ups? Why do we have such a large Cabinet that can only twiddle their thumbs while Malaysia wheezes?
During the last bad episode, we sent fire-fighters over and they did some good work over there. Let us pray we never get into the nuclear technology field as we can barely cope with forest fires.
One would have imagined that talks with the Indonesian authorities would have started once there was persistent haze of 100psi to see what cooperation is needed.

The other AP does not kill but ignoring the API situation may cost some lives among the old, the very young and the infirm.
They should have started some preparations once the fires were spotted. Some prelim talks so that after the Cabinet meeting, they could have briefed the PM on what they had done and what further actions are needed.
But then we never learn from the past, because we think we have all the answers.
Sigh.
Anyway, here is a song for the current haze:
HAZE IN THE WIND
(SING THE TUNE OF CANDLE IN THE WIND)
BY THE ASMATICS
Goodbye clear blue sky
Though we never see you anymore
We hope you've not forgotten
to come back to Singapore*
The fires won't stop burning
And no matter how hard we try
It seems we're edging closer
towards one thousand PSI
And it seems to me you lived your life
like a candle in the wind
Never staying a moment longer
when the haze set in
And your memory will always haunt us
when the CD sirens wail
Your candles burned out long before
our lungs completely fail ....

Beautiful song.
It only shows we still have great talents around.
