Indonesians Sending Desperate Smoke Signals?
I have a hazy suspicion that our drastic measures early in 2005 have resulted in the present haze situation.
We launched a massive deportation of illegals in order to establish better controls over the immigrant population.
Tens of thousands of Indonesians did not return; perhaps many could not afford to pay the fees etc.
Now Indonesia has a high rate of unemployment and many of the returnees are from Sumatra. With no jobs and little money, perhaps they have resorted to slash and burn cultivation.
Therefore the number of fires started this year could be linked to the many thousand displaced as they also need to survive.
Let us have good plans so that policies are not changed at whim. If we have policies, let us follow them properly so that everyone can work well together.
