The Term "Can of Worms"

is used to describe a problem that is difficult to solve; especially one that has been developing for some time under great secrecy.

I won't mention what problem but I would like you to make just one guess - no prizes for guessing.

I guess this term came about in the early days of food canning when the technology was new and not sophisticated.

In those days, if you opened a can with bad food, you would probably find worms in them. It would be an unsavoury experience.

Nowadays, worms and other such creatures have many uses, even medicinal treatment.
Perhaps this is one of those terms that need to be scrapped?
