Preserving our Egos
The Ministry of Information is now considering guidelines on what reality shows should be televised.
Last night I watched a repeat of Fear Factor on Channel 5 of Singapore. After watching the show, I think shows like Fear Factor should be banned for the simple reason that the girls could kick ass the boys and beat them hands down.
It simply won’t do show the local lasses beating the guys in all kinds of physical challenges. Already they are beating them in the universities and we cannot remove the last air of superiority about the men.
Some women might even get the notion that since they are superior to men, they should take more than one husband; instead of the current practice.
Last night’s episode had a buxom blonde and a beefy fireman and they had eliminated the other contestants by the previous three stunts:
1. Dangling upside from a helicopter and retrieving some items floating on some poles. I missed part of the show.
2. Getting pierced on the arm with ten needles of various gauges.
3. Eating a portion of smelly cheese and worms.
The final event was to climb out on a horizontal pole and remove a flag and clip it to a dangling rope with a hook. The distance to travel was about five meters and the diameter of the pole was about ten centimeters.
When I saw the stunt I gave up on the supposedly “dumb blonde”. The fireman was going to beat her with his eyes closed.
He won the draw to go first and he was rather cautious, using the technique of wrapping his legs around the pole and using his arms to pull. He completed the task in 29 seconds.
The blonde next got on the pole and instead of wrapping her legs around the pole, she dangled her legs and just bent at the waist and used her arms to pull her to the target. And she beat that hunk in half the time!
Thinking about this stunt, the blonde had the following advantages:
She knew the time to beat and it was really all or nothing.
Her technique effectively lowered her center of gravity as her legs were below the pole. Also her bosom also acted as a balancing aid and further reduced her CG.
The guy would have more difficulty just sitting on the pole on account of anatomical differences. No point damaging the family jewels for US$50,000.
So we cannot show men being humiliated like this on national TV. What will the women demand next?
