A Taste of Armageddon?
The devastation and deaths caused by Hurricane Katrina shows how powerless mankind is against the forces of nature.
Within one day, the city of New Orleans has been destroyed and even the most powerful nation in the world could not do anything except get people to flee from the path of the hurricane.
It was reported that the dykes holding back the waters were built for a Force 3 hurricane and the flooding design criteria was for a 300 year cycle.
You can read more doomsday scenario here.
I watched a documentary on tsunami and the scariest thing is that a giant tsunami is expected to hit the eastern seaboard ie the New York to Florida coast in the future when a volcano in the Canaries erupts and slides into the Atlantic Ocean. It is not a question of if but when. It could happen in the next 100 years or 500 years.
So far Malaysia has been sheltered from such destructive storms and we are quite complacent; assigning such mishaps to "acts of God".
But we should take more proactive steps to prevent tragedies like flooding.
For example, in the 70s KL used to flood perhaps once every 3 or 4 years. Now it is floods every time there is a heavy downpour for a few hours.
