The Price of Righteousness....
Can Religious Intolerance Bankrupt Us?
We know the following facts.
Ayah Pin was jailed for 11 months after having been found guilty to be an apostate.
Malaysia is a secular state according to our constitution and Islam is the official religion.
In recent years, the civil courts have become more reluctant to protect those who have renounced their religion.
Let us work out some numbers.
Assume the total cost of one detainee is RM25 per day.
The cost per 330 days (approx. 11 months) is RM8250 per detainee.
If there are 100 detainees, the total cost is RM825000 per annum
If there are 1000 detainees, the total cost is RM8.25million per annum
If there are one million detainees, the total cost will be RM8.25billion per annum
In theory, it is possible to get into a situation where we can have 1 million detainees costing the nation RM8.25 billion per annum.
That is only the direct cost to be borne by taxpayers.
Add to that the loss to the Gross Domestic Product of say RM12000 per annum X 1 million and we lose another RM12billion.
How can this scenario come about?
We know that Malaysian society is aging. Even young Bumiputeras are leaving, as some young citizens do not think that it is possible for things to change in Malaysia.
Some older ones will not have enough resources to take care of themselves in old age. Therefore if you renounce your religion, the government will take care of you in detention centers.
Sounds like fantasy? I hope so.
I still remember the famous scene in the movie, “The Ten Commandments” when Moses commanded the Pharaoh, “ Let My People Go.”

Some alternative to think about, seriously.
I've been paying taxes for sooo long every year; may be it's about time they feed me Curry Rice on the house.
Should any Writer/Poet make a proactive move, pls inform me in advance , eh? I may just sign up...
Curry rice on the house or floor may not be that good.
Better banana leaf...maybe I will get free food before you.
Curry Rice? Banana Leaf?
Better to check the menu before contemplating checking in.
Ask DSAI what the daily special was!
Your figures are really staggering and should someone organize such a civil disobedience movement, the authorities could be facing another huge subsidy bill!!
peterp
Thanks for your thoughts.
When you say staggering, do you mean it is not believable?
One thing about Malaysia...very good at working on the subsidy problems!
Those who contribute to the GDP will have to work doubly hard.
I meant amazing but definitely believable.
After the latest fuel price rise and the expected rise in prices of other goods and services, yea we'll have to redouble our efforts just to keep afloat.
Thanks.
Here is an even scarier scenario.
Suppose 2 million others convert and then declare themselves to be apostates, the country can go bankrupt!
Maybe some punishment may be acceptable like one or two weeks in a training center(not jail) but then everyone should be free to choose.
The training center idea is fantastic !! We should collaborate and patent the idea, approach
the government to allocate the money and we will run the whole show.
I’m thinking along the lines of the National Service camps. We would need hundreds of camps to ‘train’ approx 2mil apostates. Contractors will be breaking down our doors to secure contracts to supply the food, equipment, uniforms, and maybe even M16 rifles, etc. Whether they become more patriotic and realize that the error of their ways can upset the racial and religious harmony in the country is another matter. I mean, why should we care whether we would be able to ‘turn over’ these apostates and show them the true path. Aren’t we in it simply for the root of all evil –MONEY? Our take will be merely 10% of the annual allocation.
Surely I jest.
