Are We Corrupt or What?
Confusing Messages about Corruption
Today’s headlines are really confusing.
The New Straits Times describes how the battle against corruption is being won while the Star describes how the construction business is riddled with corrupt practices at all levels.
While it is a good development that officers have handed over envelopes to superiors, the story indicates that it seems to be new recruits that are resisting the urge to accept bribes. This is to be expected as usually most newcomers are not corrupt but after a few months, they will tend to follow the prevailing culture or risk being ostracized. Especially since we have not heard of any developments regarding the high profile cases.
Unless we attack corruption at both ends of the spectrum, we will not succeed. We must encourage new recruits to resist the temptation but more importantly, we must also bring to justice all the corrupt heads.
The other news that is quite disturbing is that senior officers are being required to pay RM1000 each to celebrate the retirement of a DG. If this is done on a voluntary basis, it is OK but rather extravagant.
If it is compulsory, it should be stopped.

Angus, One thing though at least news like this are coming out in the public. Whether or not steps are taken to address the irregularities of these is the million dollar question.

I have to agree to you on that.
Now SV asks people to make a report to the ACA.
If we really want to get rid of corruption, ACA should have some authority to investigate where it believes there is graft and not wait like some chained-up guard dog; waiting to be unleashed by a master.
Yes, ACA should be something like the ICAC in Hong Kong. Heard ICAC is really top notch.
