National Service to Discipline the Youth, What About Discipline for Adults?
While some elements for the National Service program will be useful for our youth to forge better understanding after years of neglect, I believe the program directors should focus more on how these programs can be started much earlier.
For example, there could be joint meetings and activities of uniformed groups of schools in a particular district to promote racial tolerance and understanding so that nation-building activities will extend to ALL youth and not just 10 percent.
Already we are spending more than RM600m each year on this program and trying to accept all who want to attend but not selected will only mean more costs.
Perhaps we should stick with the 10 percent and only allow replacements for those who are given exemption on proper grounds.
Or is the NS department trying to tell us all that they have over-budgeted and need to spend the surplus funds?
Otherwise what is the reason to take out a full-page advertisement in the Star to congratulate the DPM for launching the 2006 program?
