Instead of Datuk, Would you mind being addressed as Mate?
No I don’t think Australians are similar to Malaysians.
Australians can be bloody rude – perhaps not rude but just racist. I remember my first trip to Sydney with my family.
We were a little slow and a few people cussed as they overtook us on the pavement.
But they are definitely more polite on the roads. You can drive for a week there without hearing any blasts from other motorists. Malaysians, well we drive more Italian style.
Some days ago, there was a news feature about Australian security guards of the Australian Parliament upsetting the MPs as they called them “mate”. Someone was upset and wanted to censure them and to instruct them to call them with some higher sounding term.
The mighty union took the matter up and the PM had to explain that it was OK as even he used the term “mate” in his conversations.
Now do you think we should use a similar term like “kawan” when we speak to the high and mighty of Malaysia?

hi hj angus, my go'd mate!
I have no problem with Saudara or rakan,
But the MCA fellows fight for PPN, AMN and Datuk, Datuk Sli, Tan Sli (many mix up their r's and l's, you see...), some lose their way with Latuk Si, Lan Si,,,maybe these are more realistic&reflecive, but I digress -- they are thus held bondage by the UMNOputras.
but next we may have to address them as Juta-wan Tan Sri Soh & Ling-a-ding becuase the MCA Youths just elected a billionaire-at-27 to be their deputy chief ... can you imagine 5-10 years he follows the Dad's footsteps and join Hishamuddin's cabinet ...I think I feel safer sit-in protest on the streets than be caught in a whirlpool of...what they call them...Crocodile (no tears!) leading the dundeess?
Come 31 August, I don't know whether to weep with the YoungOnes, or urge 'em, join the bandwagon, and become instant millionaires by ripe old age of 30?
