SUHAKAM Must Earn Our Respect
Today’s story about Suhakam, the Malaysian Human Rights Commission, indicates that finally it has decided that more must be done to protect human rights, especially when so many deaths have occurred in police custody.
This is an interesting article on the performance of Suhakam after its first year.
It is not surprising that many Malaysians have the impression that Suhakam has been a commission mainly for the purpose of “feeling good.”
I suggest MHRC should hold public inquiries on all the eighty odd deaths that have taken place in recent years and not just the two mentioned unless there are legal limitations.
The strongest message needs to be sent out that being in police custody does not warrant torture, physical abuse or other heritage practices.
